The incentive
The NSW Government has amended its Peak Demand Reduction Scheme to include two new tiers, BESS4 and BESS5, aimed squarely at commercial and industrial battery storage at scale. Previous incentive tiers were modest. These two open up meaningful funding for businesses running larger sites, from single warehouses to multi-site logistics operations.
The numbers make the case on their own:
- BESS4 (20 to 200kWh): approximately $44,000 off a 200kWh system
- BESS5 (200kWh to 30MWh): over $1M in incentives for a 5MWh system
For a mid-sized commercial site, this can mean tens of thousands of dollars off the cost of a battery system that would otherwise sit well outside the budget. For larger industrial operations, the incentive scales with the system, making even multi-megawatt storage genuinely achievable.
